$205,000 Cash 5 win delivers opportunity for Batesville man
INDIANAPOLIS – “Incredible” is the word Vicki Christenberry used to describe her husband’s Hoosier Lottery win. Donald Christenberry Sr. of Batesville won $205,000 in the Hoosier Lottery’s new Cash 5 game when a quick pick ticket he purchased at KTS Food Mart at 1104 North St. Rd. 229 in Batesville matched all five numbers drawn Jan. 15. Christenberry’s lucky winning numbers are: 3-26-27-29-34.
Hoosier Lottery Senior Manager of Public Relations, Al Larsen introduced Christenberry and presented the lucky winner with an oversized ceremonial check at the KTS Food Mart this morning.
With the $205,000 windfall in the bank, the Christenberrys are looking forward to finally being debt-free. The parents of five and grandparents of 10 are also considering doing something they’ve never done in their lives – taking a vacation.
“We’ve never even considered a vacation before,” said Donald Christenberry. “But the first thing is to pay off all our bills. If there’s anything left over we’ll look at taking a vacation.”
“The best thing will be being able to breathe for a change without bills hanging over our head,” said Vicki Christenberry, who fought back tears at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters yesterday, as she dared to even let herself talk about the possibility of a vacation. “I sat and cried all day. My poor grandson thought something was wrong.”
Donald Christenberry is a stamping operator at Batesville Tool and Die. He said he first tried the new Cash 5 game at the urging of a co-worker who sang the game’s praises.
“When I told him how much I won he shook my hand. I told him ‘I’m glad you got me into that,’” said Christenberry. “He said, ‘I am too!’”
Donald Christenberry Sr. is the sixth player to claim a Cash 5 jackpot so far in the short history of the game, which launched Nov. 4. Players in Merrillville, Fort Wayne, Muncie, Monticello and South Bend laid claim to the game’s first five jackpot prizes.
Cash 5 offers the best cash odds of any Hoosier Lottery draw game and costs just $1 per play. The overall odds of winning are 1 in 8.8. Cash 5 numbers are drawn every night. The jackpot starts at $50,000 and rolls, or increases, every night until it is hit.
Players may purchase Cash 5 tickets anywhere Hoosier Lottery draw games are sold and may be purchased simply by asking a retail clerk for "Cash 5."
The Hoosier Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly.
The mission of the Hoosier Lottery is to maximize net income for the state in a socially-responsible manner. Player prizes for the fiscal year totaled $533 million and $60 million was earned by Indiana retailers on the sale of Hoosier Lottery products.
Since its inception in 1989, the Hoosier Lottery has produced more than $4.2 billion for the citizens of Indiana, $1 billion in commissions and bonuses for participating Indiana retailers, and has paid out more than $8.9 billion in player prizes.
