Bartholomew County woman wins $75,000
INDIANAPOLIS – Hope, Ind., population 2,102, is home to one of the Hoosier Lottery’s latest winners.
Brittany Tonarella of Hope won a $75,000 top prize on a Hoosier Lottery Scratch-off this week. Tonarella claimed her winnings at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters Monday, just a couple hours after purchasing her winning ticket at Hope Tobacco at 704 Main Street, one of only a couple Lottery retailers in town.
"I like the people there," said Tonarella. "They are like family."
The lucky young mother had stopped for a soda when she decided to buy a The Price Is Right® Scratch-off. It was an unusual purchase for her.
"I usually only buy $1 or $2 tickets," said Tonarella. "But I felt lucky."
Her hunch was right, but Tonarella was genuinely surprised to see her luck pan-out.
"I first thought I won $75, and I was happy with that!" said Tonarella. "It was shocking!"
But, Tonarella’s luck didn’t end there. The 21-year-old has an almost-two-year-old at home and is a full-time business student at Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus. She had recently decided to return to work - and she actually received a job offer on her way to claim her Hoosier Lottery winnings.
With a new job and now extra cash in the bank, Tonarella plans to take her daughter to Disney World. Before she makes any other long-term plans, the lucky young lady planned to celebrate by taking her family out to dinner.
The mission of the Hoosier Lottery is to maximize net income for the state in a socially-responsible manner. In fiscal year 2012, the Hoosier Lottery generated $211 million in surplus revenue which was used to significantly reduce the motor vehicle excise tax for all Hoosier drivers and also supported the pension funds for retired Indiana teachers, police and firefighters. Player prizes for the fiscal year totaled $533 million and $60 million was earned by Indiana retailers on the sale of Hoosier Lottery products.
Since its inception in 1989, the Hoosier Lottery has produced more than $4.2 billion for the citizens of Indiana, $1 billion in commissions and bonuses for participating Indiana retailers, and has paid out more than $8.9 billion in player prizes.
The Hoosier Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly.
