Chrysler, Burger King workers win separate
Set for Life Scratch-off top prizes
‘It’s not every day you become a millionaire’
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 14, 2017) — Two Hoosiers who live hours apart were thrilled when they discovered they won top prizes on Set for Life Scratch-offs from the Hoosier Lottery.
Michael Stephens of Hemlock, Indiana won a top prize on a $5 Set for Life Scratch-off, which is $5,000 a month for 25 years. He chose the lump sum option, which was $1,094,000 before taxes.
Michael makes a routine stop every day that includes buying a Scratch-off on his way to work at the Chrysler Casting Plant in Kokomo. He purchased the winning ticket at Super Test, 3605 S. Lafountain St. in Kokomo.
“I’m thrilled,” Michael said while claiming his prize. “I mean, it’s not every day you become a millionaire.”
Michael, who retires in eight years, plans to put his prize toward retirement and vacationing.
Ty Braugher of New Albany also took the lump sum option on his prize. Ty won a top prize on a $1 Set for Life Scratch-off of $1,000 a month for 25 years. Ty’s lump sum was $219,000 before taxes.
“This was out of pure luck,” Ty said of winning.
Ty was at Luckie’s Stop, 800 State St. in New Albany when he realized he had an extra $1 bill in his pocket. He handed it to the cashier and said to hand him any $1 Scratch-off. He scratched it at the gas station and realized he won.
“I was so shocked that I put it in my pocket and ran home in flip flops,” Ty said.
Ty, a Burger King employee, plans to put the prize money toward living expenses.
