Crown Point couple wins $1 million playing Mega Millions with Megaplier
INDIANAPOLIS –Lifelong Crown Point residents, David and Peggy Keller, came forward to claim a $1 million Mega Millions® with Megaplier® prize this afternoon. They received their check in a formal check presentation at The Hen at 524 North Main Street in Crown Point where they purchased their lucky ticket.
David Keller is retired after 35 years with the railroad and Peggy works in a family business selling and installing kitchen countertops and cabinets. The couple have two grown daughters and four young grandchildren.
“It’s a lot of money, but I understand we need to do things right so we can take care of people,” said David Keller. “We’re not going to blow it.”
The couple said they want to make their money work for their family in the long run and have already spoken with a financial advisor. After some home improvements they plan to start college funds for their grandchildren and eventually take the whole family on a trip to Disney World.
The Kellers are the first Hoosier Lottery players to win $1 million playing Mega Millions® with Megaplier® since Indiana joined the multi-state game in January 2009. The couple’s lucky ticket matched the first five numbers, but not the Megaball®, in last Tuesday night’s $380 million Mega Millions drawing. They increased their winnings by purchasing the Megaplier for an extra dollar per play. The Megaplier turned the standard $250,000 prize into a $1 million prize.
The Kellers purchased 10 plays for the $380 million drawing. They said it was unusual for them to buy more than their standard five plays. They usually don’t add the Megaplier either. For some reason they did this time.
“For some reason I was laying in bed when I started thinking about our tickets and how we hadn’t added the Megaplier,” said David Keller. “So when I got up in the morning I went and bought five more with the Megaplier.”
The Kellers won on that second set of tickets with the Megaplier.
The winning numbers in the January 4, 2011 drawing were: 4-8-15-25-47 MB: 42. The Megaplier was 4.
In all, there were 64,000 winning Mega Millions tickets sold in Indiana for the January 4 drawing.
As with all Hoosier Lottery games, the net income generated from Indiana sales of Mega Millions is turned over to the state. Last year, the Hoosier Lottery transferred $190 million to the state where it was allocated to teachers, police and firefighters retirement funds as well as the Build Indiana Fund which ultimately reduces Hoosiers’ license plate costs.
Players have 180 days to claim prizes on Hoosier Lottery draw games. The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly.
