Free ticket nets Cash 5 win in Monticello
INDIANAPOLIS – An Illinois man has laid claim to the recent Cash 5 hit in Monticello. Jim Blake of Roscoe, Ill. presented a winning Cash 5 ticket to Hoosier Lottery officials in Indianapolis April 16. That ticket matched all five numbers drawn in the April 8 Cash 5 drawing and ended up being worth $69,700.
Talk about lucky! Blake didn’t even purchase his winning ticket – he won it! Blake’s $69,700 ticket was a FREE ticket he won on an Instant Cash 5 scratch-off ticket.
Blake was on his way home from Florida April 8 when he stopped in Monticello to visit a lifelong friend and subsequently won the winning ticket at Kroger at 916 North Main Street in Monticello. He discovered his win a couple days later after his friend in Monticello called to tell him that the local paper, the Monticello Herald Journal, was reporting that a Cash 5 ticket from their local Kroger had hit the jackpot.
The retired truck driver hopes his win will ultimately allow him to see more of his buddy in Monticello.
“I’d like to get a new vehicle and a motorhome and do some more travelling,” said Blake. “Maybe he’ll come with me and I’ll get him out of the house now.”
Blake’s win is the second Cash 5 jackpot win in the town of Monticello. Steven Fansler of Monticello won a $67,500 Cash 5 jackpot in December 2012 on a ticket he purchased at RC’s Corner Cupboard at 733 North Main Street.
Blake’s win continues a Hoosier Lottery hot streak in the town of Monticello. In December 2012 Dwayne Hampton of Monticello won $1 million on a Lucky Millionaire Scratch-off at Eastside Marathon at 723 South Main Street. Steven Bonnell of Monticello claimed a $100,000 prize on a scratch-off ticket he purchased in Marion.
Other players in the White County town have also reaped recent Hoosier Lottery rewards. In July 2012 Dana Hufford of Monticello purchased a $100,000 winning Tag 6 ticket at Casey’s General Store at 1506 North 6th Street. That is the same retailer where another Monticello resident, Richard Bowsher, purchased a $77,777 winning Scratch-off in March 2011. Kenneth McCall of White County purchased a $75,000 winning Scratch-off at Kroger at 916 North Main Street in September 2010 – the same retail location that Blake’s winning ticket came from.
The mission of the Hoosier Lottery is to maximize net income for the state in a socially-responsible manner. In fiscal year 2012, the Hoosier Lottery generated $211 million in surplus revenue which was used to significantly reduce the motor vehicle excise tax for all Hoosier drivers and also supported the pension funds for retired Indiana teachers, police and firefighters. Player prizes for the fiscal year totaled $533 million and $60 million was earned by Indiana retailers on the sale of Hoosier Lottery products.
Since its inception in 1989, the Hoosier Lottery has produced more than $4.2 billion for the citizens of Indiana, $1 billion in commissions and bonuses for participating Indiana retailers, and has paid out more than $8.9 billion in player prizes.
