Greenwood man scratches his way to $1 million
INDIANAPOLIS – A Greenwood man is the first Hoosier Lottery player to win a $ 1 million prize on Indiana’s $5 Million Club Scratch-off. Scott Smith presented his winning ticket at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters February 18. He elected to take the $1 million prize in a lump sum, rather than a 20 year annuity, and received $736,629 before taxes.
“It’s extremely exciting!” said Smith as he claimed his winnings.
Smith, who works as a nightclub DJ, plans to use his winnings for his 3-year-old son’s college fund.
Indiana’s $5 Million Club Scratch-off boasts three $5 million top prizes at this time. Four prizes of $1 million are also unclaimed at this time. Two of the $5 million prizes are instant prizes. The third will be awarded through the game’s second chance promotion.
The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly, and to always sign the back of their tickets.
As with all Hoosier Lottery games, the net income generated from the sale of Scratch-offs in Indiana is turned over to the state. Last year, the Hoosier Lottery transferred $190 million to the state where it was allocated to teachers, police and firefighters retirement funds as well as the Build Indiana Fund which ultimately reduces Hoosiers’ license plate costs.
