Meet the latest Powerball millionaires
Polar Pop stop prompts million-dollar win at Columbus Circle K
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 17, 2013) - A Columbus couple are the Hoosier Lottery's latest $1 million Powerball winners.
Hoosier Lottery officials introduced Larry and Mary Baldwin Tuesday morning at a ceremoney at Circle K at 1720 National Road in Columbus, the retail location where the lucky couple purchased their winning ticket.
Larry Baldwin checked his ticket and discovered his good fortune while at work last Thursday.
"I got my ticket out and started checking the numbers on my phone. I thought 'well, I recognize a couple of those numers,' so I checked 'em on the website," said Baldwin, who immediately called his wife to share the good news. "It was a long afternoon at work!"
The winning Powerball numbers for Sept. 11, 2013 were: 11-19-33-42-52 PB: 33.
"I double checked the numbers and sent him a note that said 'you're a winner,' He sent me a note back that said "'No. we're winners.'" said Mary Baldwin.
The Baldwin's million-dollar ticket matched five of the first five numbers, but not the Powerball number in the Wednesday, Sept. 11 drawing. They defied odds of one in more than 5.1 million (1:5,153,633) to win the million-dollar prize - and missed the $245 million jackpot by one number.
The Baldwins have five grown children and five grandchildren. They are both technically retired from Cummins in Delphi, but both still work full-time as contractors for the company. Even with a $1 million prize in the bank, they don't plan to quit working anytime soon.
They do plan to cross something off their bucket list: a trip to Hawaii! The couple said they had Intended to go for their 30th anniversary but that never panned out. After winning a $1 milion Powerball prize, the Baldwins are ready to start planning their dream Hawaiian vacation.
Hoosier Lottery offiicals also presented a $10,000 bonus check (one percent of the prize capped at $100,000) to Circle K this morning as well. Market Manager Allison Plumlee accepted the check on behalf of Circle K.
The Baldwins were excited to see the store get a bonus. The lucky winners confess that they visit the retailer almost every day for one main reason - they love their Polar Pops! They credit their million-dollar win on their Polar Pop stop, which prompted their winning-ticket purchase.
"We come in here every day for our Polar Pops," said Larry Baldwin.
The Baldwins are regular Powerball players. With a $400 million jackpot for Wednesday night, the couple hopes to recreate their good luck. They plan to buy their Powerball ticket - and a Polar Pop - at the same Circle K for Wednesday's $400 million drawing.
Indiana Powerball players have until 9:58 p.m. Eastern Wednesday night to grab their shot at the jackpot. Central Indiana Powerball players can watch Wednesday's Powerball drawing on television, on FOX 59 at 10:59 p.m.
Powerball players should check their tickets carefully after every drawing because thousands of players win secondary prizes every drawing. Indiana still leads the nation in Powerball jackpot wins with 38.
