Mitchell woman takes top prize in Cash Explosion scratch-off
INDIANAPOLIS – The shock of winning was written all over Carmen Whitham’s face as she entered Hoosier Lottery headquarters Tuesday afternoon. Witham claimed the top prize of $125,000 on a scratch-off ticket she purchased the prior evening and was still coming to terms with her win.
“I slept with the ticket in my wallet and my wallet in my hands all night!” explained Whitham.
Whitham selected her $5 Cash Explosion Scratch-off ticket while purchasing gas and other items from the local Marathon station, known as Gasoline Alley to those in the area, located at 3966 SR 37 in Mitchell, Ind. on Monday night. She scratched the ticket while still at the gas station and was stunned at the amount she was seeing on the ticket.
“I couldn’t believe it was real,” said Whitham. “My friend thought I’d won $125 and told him it was a bit more than that!”
A student, Whitham is currently unemployed while finishing up her degree. She plans to use her winnings to help purchase a new laptop to continue her studies, a cell phone, as well as a reliable car for transportation.
The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly, and to always sign the back of their tickets.
As with all Hoosier Lottery games, the net income generated from sale of scratch-offs in Indiana is turned over to the state. Last year, the Hoosier Lottery transferred $190 million to the state where it was allocated to teachers, police and firefighters retirement funds as well as the Build Indiana Fund which ultimately reduces Hoosiers’ license plate costs.
