Monticello man wins $1 million Hoosier Lottery prize
Million-dollar win is second big Hoosier Lottery prize
in Monticello this month
INDIANAPOLIS – A White County man won $1 million instantly on a Hoosier Lottery Scratch-off this week. Dwayne Hampton of Monticello is the latest lucky Hoosier to win a top prize on the Lucky Millionaire Scratch-off.
Hampton claimed his prize at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis Monday morning with his wife Joanne. Hampton works as a rehab therapist at the Indiana Veterans Home and his wife is a medical assistant. The lucky couple plans to use their winnings to buy a new truck, pay off all their financial obligations and put the rest away for their two sons’ educations.
“It’s a big relief,” said Joanne Hampton. “It makes you feel good to know your bills are paid.”
Hampton purchased his Lucky Millionaire ticket at Eastside Marathon at 723 South Main Street in Monticello. He actually walked into the store last Friday intending to purchase a different Lottery game. He waffled between two games but eventually decided to go with Lucky Millionaire at the clerk’s friendly urging of, “Oh, go for it!”
Hampton is glad that clerk was there and he’s glad he went for it because he is now the game’s sixth instant millionaire. Six instant prizes of $1 million remain unclaimed on the Lucky Millionaire Scratch-off at this time.
Hampton is the second lucky player from Monticello to claim big winnings this month. His win comes on the heels of a $100,000 Scratch-off win by Steven Bonnell of Monticello on Dec. 5.
The mission of the Hoosier Lottery is to return the maximum net income to the state in a socially-responsible manner. In fiscal year 2011, the Hoosier Lottery generated $188 million in net income which was used to significantly reduce the motor vehicle excise tax for all Hoosier drivers and also supported the pension funds for retired Indiana teachers, police and firefighters. Player prizes for the fiscal year totaled $495 million and $56 million was earned by Indiana retailers on the sale of Hoosier Lottery products.
Since its inception in 1989, the Hoosier Lottery has produced more than $4.2 billion in net income for the citizens of Indiana, nearly $1 billion in commissions and bonuses for participating Indiana retailers, and has paid out more than $8.9 billion in player prizes.
The Hoosier Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly.
