Muncie couple grateful for $1 million win
INDIANAPOLIS – A Muncie couple walked into Hoosier Lottery Headquarters today and presented a winning scratch-off ticket worth $1 million to Lottery officials. They walked out with a handsome check and peace of mind.
Greg Grzesk, a recent retiree from Pendleton Correctional Facility, was on his way to read to his wife Liz’s second grade class last Thursday, December 16 when he stopped and purchased an $80 Million Cash Spectacular ticket at Gas America at 1900 S. Tillotson in Muncie. He scratched the ticket in the gas station parking lot, but kept the $1 million win to himself and calmly continued on to the school where he read to the class.
“I didn’t want to disturb her teaching,” said Greg Grzesk, who waited until the end of the school day to finally tell his wife the good news.
“When he called me aside and showed me the ticket, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,” said Liz Grzesk. “I think he did both.”
Upon seeing the winning ticket, Liz, a teacher of 21 years, exhibited the same restraint her husband had shown. She put the ticket in her book bag and quietly held onto it for almost a week - until school was out for Christmas break.
“The kids are so wound up this time of year, I didn’t want to take a day off and leave them with a substitute teacher while I came to Indianapolis,” said Liz with a laugh.
The hardworking and soft-spoken couple say they are grateful for the peace of mind the winnings offer. Liz Grzesk is a cancer survivor. Their win offers them the chance to pay off Liz’s medical bills once and for all.
“It’s a Godsend,” said Liz. “We feel really blessed.”
Grzesk claimed the third of eight $1 million top prizes on the $80 Million Cash Spectacular game.
The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly, and to always sign the back of their tickets.
