Officials raise Powerball® estimate to $425 million

Jackpot is third biggest in game's history

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 6, 2013) -  Wednesday's estimated Powerball jackpot has been increased from $400 milllion to $425 million as of noon today.  Multi-State Lottery Officials (MUSL) raised the jackpot estimate as players flocked to stores nationwide to purchase tickets ahead of tomorrow night's drawing.

In Indiana, players have until 9:58 p.m. (Eastern) Wednesday to purchase their shot at the jackpot.

At $425 million, Wednesday's jackpot would be the third highest ever. The record Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won in May in Florida. The second-largest jackpot of $587 million was split by two players -- one from Arizona and one from Missouri -- in November 2012.

If a Hoosier wins Wednesday's $425 million jackpot, he or she would claim the largest jackpot ever won in Indiana, beating out a $314.3 million Powerball jackpot won in Richmond in 2007.

Hoosiers have been playing, and winning, Powerball in Indiana since the game started in 1992.  A Hoosier laid claim to the very first Powerball jackpot on April 22 of that year. Hoosier Lottery retailers have gone on to sell a record 38 Powerball jackpot winning tickets since that time.  That's more than any other state - and 11 more wins than the next closest state, Missouri.

With the recent addition of California to the game, Powerball is now played in 43 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
