Powerball jackpot tops $100 million!
East Chicago man latest in string of 20 $1 million winners in Hoosier state
INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 22, 1014) - The Powerball jackpot has once again topped $100 million!
Hoosier Lottery players have a chance at an estimated $131 million Powerball prize for tonight's drawing.
A lucky Powerball jackpot winner in tonight's drawing would have the option of taking the full jackpot prize, paid over a 30-year annuity, or in an estimated one-time lump sum payment of approximately $73.8 million.
Hoosier Lottery players are historically big fans of the Powerball, as they should be! Players in Indiana have won 38 Powerball jackpots - that's more than any other state.
In the 45 jurisdictions that sell Powerball tickets, more than 1,000 millionaires, including 34 jackpot winners, have won more than $1.1 billion in prizes in the last two years.
Twenty of those million dollar wins were by Powerball players in Indiana. One additional lucky player in the Hoosier state added the Power Play option and increased his winnings to $2 million.
Meet Indiana's latest Powerball millionaire
Luis Hernandez of East Chicago is the most recent of Indiana's 20 Powerball millionaires.
The lucky winner claimed his big prize at Hoosier Lottery headquarters Jan. 17.
Hernandez says the key to his big Powerball win was faith and family. He had a lucky quick pick, which matched five of the Powerball numbers in an October 2013 drawing.
The set of seemingly random numbers allowed Hernandez to claim $1 million that he is excited to share with his family.
Hernandez who has been a Powerball player for many years said the win was very emotional for him.
"I felt like my grandmother was smiling over my shoulder with the win. I didn't pick the numbers specifically, but each number had a special meaning like my grandmother's birthday and year," Hernandez explained.
The Lake County resident said the win comes at a great time and he looks forward to caring for his parents and ensuring his grandkids have a bright future with the winnings.
"I have a good feeling that everything is going to work out."
