Remington purchase gives Indianapolis man big Cash 5 win

GonzalezINDIANAPOLIS – Eleven days, 92 miles and an expired driver’s license. That’s what separated a recent Cash 5 jackpot hit in Remington and the winner who claimed it Tuesday in Indianapolis.

Back on March 31, Benjamin Gonzalez’s father surprised him with news that Benjamin’s ticket had won the jackpot in the March 30 Cash 5 drawing. But, Benjamin had to wait to claim his $84,724 prize. It wasn’t a lack of enthusiasm that kept him from coming to Hoosier Lottery Headquarters sooner. It was an expired driver’s license and a hectic work schedule.

“I had to get a new license and I couldn’t get away from work to do it,” said Benjamin. “So, I had to wait. I finally got that done last weekend, so then I could come in and get my prize.”

But, how did a Remington retailer – Casey’s at 21 West Division Street, to be exact -- become the lucky spot for an Indianapolis resident?

“My dad and I have this tradition of going here and there to buy lottery tickets, just for fun,” said Benjamin. “Since he lives close to Remington and has better luck than I do, I gave him a few bucks and let him pick the numbers.”
