Retired Merrillville steelworker hits $77,500 on Cash 5
INDIANAPOLIS – Men, here’s reason number 77,500 to listen to your wives. It can pay off in a multitude of ways. Just ask Edgar Relf of Merrillville. The lucky Lake County man has an extra $77,500 in the bank because he listened to his wife when she urged him to purchase a Cash 5 ticket that ended up being the game’s first jackpot winner!
To be fair, Relf’s win wasn’t all his wife’s doing. While she encouraged him to try the new game, it was Relf’s selection of five of his favorite numbers that netted him the big bucks. All five of his chosen numbers matched the Nov. 15 winning numbers: 8-9-19-29-39.
“Those are some of my favorite numbers,” said Relf. “Eight is one of my regular numbers and then everything else I went with was a nine.”
All those nines added up to $77,500 for the lucky retiree. Because he played an easily recognizable sequence of nines, a number that is special to him, Relf said he knew immediately he had won.
“I looked at the Cash 5 numbers and I said, ‘I played those numbers! Those are my numbers!’” said Relf.
After 37 years of working in the steel mills and three years of retirement, Relf is ready to truly enjoy himself. In fact, he’s already made his first purchase, a new watch, which he purchased on a home shopping channel when he couldn’t sleep after discovering his win late on the night of Nov. 15.
Relf purchased his winning ticket at GoLo at 6085 Cleveland Circle in Merrillville. Hoosier Lottery Public Relations Manager introduced Relf to the media at an event at the store this afternoon.
Cash 5, which costs just $1 to play and draws every night, features the best cash odds of any Hoosier Lottery draw game and a jackpot that starts at $50,000. The jackpot rolls, or increases, every day until it is hit.
