Shelbyville man wins $40,000 with Mega Millions

ReedINDIANAPOLIS – Larry Reed of Shelbyville is a man of routine.  Each week, he stops at the same gas station, Murphy USA located at 2501 Progress Way, to fill up his tank and purchase his favorite Hoosier Lottery draw game tickets before heading into work as a laborer at Honda Manufacturing.  One weekend in January, however, his routine was altered at bit after scanning what would turn out to be a winning Mega Millions® with Megaplier® ticket at the self-checker.

“It told me I needed to go to my local Hoosier Lottery office,” said Reed.  “I asked the clerk to check it with her machine and it told her the same thing.”

After asking the cashier for a print out of the winning numbers from the January 25th drawing, Reed returned to his truck to check the numbers on his ticket.  He knew immediately he had won a sizeable prize.

Reed matched the first four of five balls and the Megaball® which would have scored him a $10,000 prize; but with the purchase of Megaplier® for an extra dollar, Reed was able to multiply his winnings four times resulting in a $40,000 win.

“I’ve never won this much,” said Reed.  “The most I’ve collected in the past was $1000.”

Reed says he plans to continue working and will put some of the money towards a down payment on a new home.  He also plans to help out his fifteen-year-old daughter, his mother and his step-father who he says have always supported him.

“I’m just happy to be able to do something nice for them.”

The Hoosier Lottery reminds players to always play responsibly, and to always sign the back of their tickets.

As with all Hoosier Lottery games, the net income generated from Indiana sales of Mega Millions® tickets is turned over to the state. Last year, the Hoosier Lottery transferred $190 million to the state where it was allocated to teachers, police and firefighters retirement funds as well as the Build Indiana Fund which ultimately reduces Hoosiers’ license plate costs.
