Sweet relief: New Castle woman wins Cash For Life
Woman wins top prize on very first Cash For Life purchase
INDIANAPOLIS (July 31, 2013) - A New Castle woman's financial struggles vanished before her eyes this week when she scratched-off a top prize on a Hoosier Lottery Cash For Life ticket.
Debra Garner is seeing a light at the end of the tunnel after claiming a $600,000 cash prize at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis Monday. Garner had her choice of $1,000 a week for life (for a minimum of 20 years) or a lump sum one-time payout of $600,000. The mother-of-eight and grandmother-of-twelve opted for the cash payout.
"This is something that honestly for us is going to be life changing," said Garner who fought back tears as she talked about what the windfall means to her and her family. "With this I can actually get a home and own it without worrying about how I'm going to pay for it. "
Garner has opened her home to her children and grandchildren on several occasions as her family members struggled through tough times. Although her husband works hard at his job at ConAgra, Garner said it has not always been easy to meet the needs of their large family.
"This has been one of the greatest things God could ever do for us, honestly." said Garner. "You always hear and see on TV this happen to everybody else. You spend that money every once in a while - and I don't buy 'em often - but you just don't think it's going to happen to you. I really was thankful to God. It really will change the rest of our lives."
Garner purchased her winning ticket at Speedway at 1801 Broad Street in New Castle. Although she plays the Lottery occasionally, her winning $2 ticket was the first Cash For Life ticket she had ever purchased.
Garner is the second Hoosier to claim $1,000 a week for life on the $2 Cash For Life game. Carl Manning Sr. of Indianapolis claimed his Cash For Life winnings in April after purchasing his winning ticket at Nelson's Marathon on Shelby Street in Indianapolis.
The Cash For Life family of games is a four-game set which gives players the choice between tickets that cost $1, $2, $5 and $10 and offers a chance to win top prizes from $500 a week for life to $5,000 a week for life. The Cash For Life games will always feature available top prizes.
Since Cash For Life launched in April, players have won more than $34 million in prizes.
