Whiting winner keeping $150,000 scratch-off win in perspective

MarginotINDIANAPOLIS – Perspective is a good thing, especially when you find yourself holding a winning Hoosier Lottery scratch-off ticket worth $150,000.

Whiting’s Ralph Maginot, who found himself in that exact spot on Sunday, is unfazed by his good fortune. Admittedly, he was initially surprised to see the $150,000 prize appear on the $5 Cashta$tic Scratch-off he bought at Luke’s at 3550 Sheffield Avenue in Hammond. But, then he went to dinner as planned, went to work and came down to Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis to claim his prize – accompanied by his “better half” of 14 years, Lynn Robertson.

“We’re very blessed with our friends and our families, and you don’t ever think something like this is going to happen to you,” said Robertson. “But, I’ve seen (Ralph) give to people who needed help when he didn’t have much to give, so if anyone deserves it, it’s him.”

As far as any future plans that involve the winnings, don’t look for Maginot to operate any differently.

“No big plans here,” said Maginot. “We’re just going to stay level-headed. We’ll pay off some bills and tuck the rest away. We’re not going to go nuts.”

The mission of the Hoosier Lottery is to maximize net income for the state in a socially-responsible manner. In fiscal year 2012, the Hoosier Lottery generated $211 million in surplus revenue which was used to significantly reduce the motor vehicle excise tax for all Hoosier drivers and also supported the pension funds for retired Indiana teachers, police and firefighters. Player prizes for the fiscal year totaled $533 million and $60 million was earned by Indiana retailers on the sale of Hoosier Lottery products.

Since its inception in 1989, the Hoosier Lottery has produced more than $4 billion for the citizens of Indiana, $1 billion in commissions and bonuses for participating Indiana retailers, and has paid out more than $8.8 billion in player prizes.

The Hoosier Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly.
